This week my parents attended a couple of lectures on the country of Turkey; this is also the week that I finished up my paper on splintering urbanism in Istanbul, Turkey. At the lectures they were given a list of books for further reading on Turkey or taking place in the country. Turkey is one of the country’s on my list of places to possibly study abroad, but if I cannot go I’m sure some of these will make their way into my reading stack.
- Birds Without Wings (Louis de Bernieres)
- Crescent and Star: Turkey Between Two Worlds (Stephen Kinzer) — author of the wonderfully insightful All the Shah’s Men (my review) and also the speaker at their event
- The Forty Rules of Love (Elif Shafak)
- A Mind at Peace (Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar)
- The Missing Rose (Serdar Ozkan)
- Portrait of a Turkish Family (Irfan Orga)
- Snow (Orhan Pamuk)
- Turkey: A Quest for Identity (Feroz Admad)
Thanks for the list! Heading there next year and starting to compile a reading list. Good luck with the assignments.
