“Have you ever been a member of a book club? How did your group choose (or, if you haven’t been, what do you think is the best way to choose) the next book and who would lead discussion?
Do you feel more or less likely to appreciate books if you are obliged to read them for book groups rather than choosing them of your own free will? Does knowing they are going to be read as part of a group affect the reading experience?”
I’ve never been a member of a book club but as most high schools in this country, I do have to trudge through required reading. [If you go to my categories/tags list and click on “school books,” you can find all my required reading.] I think I don’t appreciate books as much if I’m obligated to read them. Rather than choosing to read Breakfast at Tiffany’s or Slaughterhouse-Five, I was forced to and couldn’t enjoy them partly because I didn’t have a reason for picking them up, such as the synopsis sounded interesting or I liked the cover.
For the most part I didn’t enjoy many of the books I had to read in high school. There were a couple I did like, especially Animal Farm and all time favorite. But I do really enjoy book clubs, it challenges me to read things I may not normally read and I find I like a lot of them.
